As we approach the end of 2024, it’s the perfect time to reflect on what we’ve achieved together and look forward to the exciting opportunities that 2025 promises. But first, a quick question: are you following us on Instagram yet? (No pressure, but it’s a great way to stay connected. Search @ardenstudents to find us!)

A Big Thank You

Before we get started, let’s take a moment to celebrate you. Your passion, dedication, and commitment to representing your peers’ academic interests have been truly inspiring. Our Student President, Jay Agbaje, shares this heartfelt message:

“As the year winds down and the winter break begins, I want to thank you for your hard work and dedication. You’ve made a real difference by supporting your fellow students and creating a more positive university experience for everyone. Stepping into this role, I’ve been impressed by the energy and passion you bring to your responsibilities. Let’s make 2025 even better together. But for now, take some well-deserved time to rest, recharge, and enjoy the season!”

Highlights of 2024

What a year it’s been! Together, we’ve achieved so much. Here are just a few standout moments:

A New President

This year, we saw a leadership transition, with Dace concluding her second term as President and Jay stepping into the role. Jay has already started driving impactful initiatives for students. (Check out Jay’s introduction here).

Growing the Team

Our Students’ Association team has expanded, now with four dedicated staff members supporting and empowering you as Student Representatives. (You can meet the team on our Instagram!)

Campaigns for Change

Student-led campaigns that made waves this year:

  • Neurodiversity Awareness: A panel during the university’s Diversity Fest shone a spotlight on improving services for neurodiverse students.

Annual Monitoring Success

We contributed to the university’s Annual Monitoring Review panels, showcasing how your voices are driving positive changes and shaping programme improvements.

A Thriving Rep Network

Our Student Rep community has grown to over 110 members and continues to expand. Your efforts are crucial to representing students’ academic interests, and we couldn’t do it without you.

Looking Ahead to 2025

While 2024 has been fantastic, we’re setting our sights even higher for 2025. Here’s what’s on our resolution list:

Improving Unitu

With a new student database system rolling out, Unitu access for new students will temporarily pause. We’re using this as an opportunity to update the platform and make it even more effective for you. Expect updates in early January.

Promoting Positive Student Culture

You spoke, we listened. Jay is collaborating with campus teams to review and refine the code of conduct to foster a supportive, positive environment. We’ll be seeking your input, so watch out for consultation announcements in the new year.

A New Website

January brings the launch of our newly redesigned website, the phase one of creating a vibrant digital community. Future updates will include a dedicated ‘Rep Hub’ and community spaces.

Building a Rep Community

We’re launching a WhatsApp community and developing a Rep Hub on our website to help you connect, share resources, and support each other. Expect more regular newsletters, catch-ups, and opportunities to collaborate.

Strengthening the Foundation

The year ahead will see us laying down the building blocks of your Students’ Association. This includes launching an academic advice service and running consultations to shape representation, democracy, and the student officer team for the future.

Stay Involved During the Break

The winter break is a great time to recharge, but there are also opportunities to stay engaged:

  • Seasonal Volunteering: Many charities are busier during this season and welcome extra hands. Volunteering is a wonderful way to give back, connect with your local community, and make a difference.

  • Rep WhatsApp Community: We’re transitioning to a moderated WhatsApp community to support a positive and inclusive Rep space. The existing chat won’t be supported moving forward, so we encourage you to join the new community.

Help Us Help You

We have partnered up with the university and will shortly be sending out communications to students (email and student hub) all about the winter closure and the services of support. As the university and Students’ Association will not be monitoring communication channels over the break, please can we ask that you ensure your students are aware of this through your other channels in case anyone may need it!

In January, we’ll be hosting student consultations to shape the future of your association. We’d love for you to participate and encourage your peers to join as well. Sign up via our Students’ Association website here.

Do you have a success story to share? We’re all ears! Fill out our form and let us celebrate your achievements
